Winter Activities for the Family

We all know the six months of winter in Northern Ontario can be daunting to even the most seasoned parents, and sometimes even the thought of getting the kids outside sends chills down my spine.

I know the evidence for getting into nature, the benefits of physical activity and the importance of family time together- so here are a few tips for preparing for your winter adventures, no matter what the weather.

1. Skating

2. Sledding

3. Snowshoeing (or exploring nature trails, open golf courses, or large parks)

3. Winter Scavenger Hunt

(I used this one from CBC Parents)

Once you\’re done, bring some pinecones inside for crafting or counting, and use a baking tray to bring in a mound of snow and add in some cookie cutters and food colouring to extend the fun.

4. Snow Painting

Use leftover coffee in a squirt bottle or old classic ketchup bottle with lid to spray or squirt your \”paint\” onto the snow outside.

You can also mix cornstarch and water with food colouring too.

5. Winter Picnic

Grab your winter gear, and a car full of warm blankets and a tarp, hot cocoa, take out from your favourite local restaurant, and hand/foot warmers — pick a sheltered spot or picnic table and enjoy some time in nature with your family.
